Shi Xinji

1980 Born in Shangqiu, Henan Province
2008 Graduated from Department of Printmaking of Central Academy of Fine Art, Master Degree

Buddhism, Taoism and Chinese ancient mythology Shan Hai Jing was a great influence on his creations. Many of his scenes, animals and plants can be traced in Shan Hai Jing. Shi’s works give audience a sense of hybridity, which blended reality, history and mythology altogether. It offers audience a platform to rethink reality issues under the contemporary social context. Shi’s work always begins with trivial objects. He depicts ordinary scenes, attempting to create a clear and mysterious world through calculated blank-leaving and space transformation. Through years, Shi Xinji’s artistic style gets more abstract in order to create a unique atmosphere. He tends to overcome various barriers in real life and transcend temporal-spatial constraints. Furthermore, his works represent his desolate spirit with a natural and pleasant interest. His artistic language contains surrealism features, but not so over-the-top like that of Surreal-Pop art, though it is more complicated and meaningful than Pop language. Shi also retains some randomness in his painting, triggering life and delight out of papers.
