Chen Yufan
1973 Born in Pu Tian, Fujian Province
1997 Graduated from the College of Art, Fujian Normal University with a B.A.
2007 Graduated from Integrated Art Department of China Academy of Art with an M.A.
He currently works and lives in Shanghai.
Chen Yufan’s works can be found in two categories: installation and painting. While “Mulan River” Series represent his installation works, “Into One” Series for his painting works. Traditional rituals and etiquette of his hometown are considered his creative motif. After moving to metropolis like Hangzhou and Shanghai, Chen felt detached to the urban lifestyle and created “Throw it into the air” and “Derivative” to reflect his vagrant feelings.
The stratifying forms in Chen’s artworks unfold with the compression of time. Natural materials, the medium of his works, emphasize the pure and self-sufficient features of his language. Meanwhile, there is a dimension of natural narrative weaving the form of paintings. Chen Yufan claimed that his works are neither abstract nor conceptual. The essence of his works is his inner-experience in the making of art.
